1900s Winter Cape

Sewing patterns available here

Hello everyone!
This is the first cape I release in my shop and I’m very excited about this!

This cape was quite a challenge to make since I found an online photo (just one!) of the front of the cape and nothing more. The resolution was also quite low so I had to guess how to continue the embroidery scheme on the sides by researching existing embroideries of that era, and I also had to guess the pattern.

The original cape is probably a full circle pattern, but I made mine less voluminous for two reasons:

  1. I want to use it on daily basis, this is why it has to be as comfortable as possible
  2. I’m already making a voluminous cape which, I hope, you’ll see within Autumn. It is so voluminous that it weights a lot and I can’t use it anytime I want!

Another thing I changed is the type of material used for the embroidery. I was going mad while looking for a mat rat tail cord. I gave up the research and I used a vintage cotton yarn, which was quite strong and useful for the purpose. The fun side of the story is that, the day after I finished the embroidery, the mat rat tail I desperately needed, pop up in my browser…

I used a thin wool which I already had in my stash, but a thicker one will work a lot better. I had to add more support on the collar which is useless in case a different wool is used.
For those who wanna have more volume (and a closed cape) I wrote how to make the necessary alterations on the sewing pattern file.

Hope you liked this post and see you in the next one!
